I bought this router a few weeks ago and I received version 1 of this model and not version 2. The specifications advertised here are for version 2 but you will not get version 2. This product does not have support for 802.11N (draft 2.0). I sent the router back for a refund.
A very good looking modem which was not as easy to set up as was suggested in some trade reviews. However having got it set up it now works perfectly. Long may it continue.
I strongly recommend that you do not buy this router. I purchased this router back in November and after being connected and working it suddenly decided to drop its connection and lose its power. The only way I could get the router to work again was to remove the DC jack plug and push it back in; immediately then it would work for a while and then stop. The router was replaced by the supplier but since then I have now had to send the replacement router off. This time it was a different fault in that it was just losing the Internet connection. As soon as I replaced it with a serviceable spare my broadband connection was up and running again.
I believe that this product has been rushed to market without adequate testing. The first replacement router had a different power supply which is an indication that Cisco lacked faith in the original power supply. It looked to me that it just was not up to the job. I work with Cisco routers and switches and so I was very disappointed that this particular Cisco product has not lived up to the name and reputation that I had expected.
My advice is to stay clear of this product until they’ve got all the issues sorted out with it.
It looks great on paper, but the implementation of this is atrocious – it takes 10 minutes to sync with the ADSL signal (my old netgear connected much faster), reboots completely randomly. It appears to only work with either wireless or wired connections = try and do both, and the other connection type drops off.
Cisco/Linksys should be ashamed of pushing out such third rate product.
I had waited two years for the new wireless standard “N” to be ratified and buy a replacement for my old Linksys WAG54GS. At the beginning of March 2010 I bought a Linksys WAG160N, as I had been “relatively” pleased with my old Linksys Wireless Router. I entered my settings, checked the speed and was still getting 12 Mbps with the LAN cable plugged in. I went round the house to the other four PCs running both XP & Windows 7. I didn’t check the speed, but all connected wirelessly, a couple had to have Authentication turned Off before they would connect, but it seemed like a smooth transition.
Then, earlier this week, I got a new Dell laptop and checked out its wireless speed, less than 2 Mbps. At first I thought it was a problem with the Dell, so I did a wireless speed test on all the PCs and they were all getting less than 2 Mbps. I unplugged the WAG160N and plugged in the old WAG54GS. Wireless speeds went back up to just under 12 Mbps on all of the PCs.
I spent two hours talking to Linksys, through their “Live Chat”, they recommended several setting changes, which I have since found are their standard quick fixes. None of the changes, turning off, re-booting etc. worked.
I knew what was coming, messing about for weeks with firmware upgrades, it’s your phone line, it’s your ISP, it’s your exchange. No it’s not, the old WAG54GS works fine!!! At this price, the WAG160N should work properly straight out of the box.
Good job I bought it from Amazon, returned for refund. Pity.
